Fairbanks, Alaska – An Iditarod Champion’s Winter Wonderland

This tip comes from our Explorer: Bernadetta Handayani

Fairbanks might not be the city you have in mind when you’re planning on a trip to Alaska. But there are a lot of activities you can do, like drive up to North Pole (the city) for early Christmas shopping, soak up on some natural hot spring goodness, or even better, ride a dog sled at Lance Mackey Comeback Kennel.

Lance Mackey Comeback Kennel is located just 35 minutes from downtown Fairbanks (Resolution Rd.). Although it might take longer in winter because of the slippery road. The kennel is owned by Lance Mackey, a town hero. Lance won the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled four years in a row. It’s not surprising that this place can get fully booked during the summer. But it is more exciting to visit it during the winter. The place truly transforms into a winter puppy wonderland.

The kennel offers summer and winter tours. The tour is about 1.5 hours with 15 minutes of dog sledding demonstration. After the ride, the puppies are waiting for you for some playtime. Prior reservation is highly recommended, especially in the winter. And maybe if you’re lucky Lance himself could be the one picking up the phone and being your tour guide.
