The “Lost City” of Petra. On film, it’s where the infamous whip wielding Jones met up with his dad to find the Holy Grail. In real life, it was once a booming trading center and the capital of the Nabataean empire. The city was abandoned for centuries, until a European traveler rediscovered it. According to Susan Shain, the best time to visit is early in the morning. It opens to the public at 6 AM. The early morning wake up call may seem rough, but you’ll be rewarded with relative peace and quiet, and a lack of other tourists.
